Russell, I agree with you at least to a point. I’m what I call. “trashy” reader. It just means I read just about everything I see. So it includes science and medical writing. Lots of it. And I’m irritated by preambles or just rambling along. Get to the point! Yes, I want the results up front and then the process and actual examples. The sources should always go at the end. But no! They’re always first - crowing about WHO did this. And I most certainly do want the sources. But there is room for storytelling. I read these articles as a patient looking for answers. There were NOT enough stories/examples for me. I needed them to make it more personal. Stories do that.
